The new Clarion Copenhagen Airport Hotel was transformed step by step by Semrén & Månsson.

A thoughtful interior design concept combining sumptuous style and hospitable comfort. The hotel, which previously belonged to another chain, became part of the Clarions portfolio following renovations and was renamed the Clarion Copenhagen Airport Hotel. The previously non-functional first floor was transformed into private zones with restaurants, a bar and a lounge, while on the upper floor, the former VIP spaces were converted into exclusive hotel rooms with four-meter-high ceilings and a unique atmosphere.

The hotel used to belong to another chain and was the only option for accommodations at the airport. It was a place mostly frequented by business travelers in order to save time, do a little work, have a meeting, eat and sleep. It was functional, practical and predictable, but altogether a little soulless.
Today, the Clarion Copenhagen Airport Hotel makes a completely different impression. It has become warm and inviting. The first thing that strikes the guest’s eye is the sophisticated play between the interior design, the lighting, the materials and the individual. The turquoise bar, sparkling like a precious stone. The guests: some sit chatting in the corner, others are hunched over working on their laptops, and still others are drinking cocktails on the barstools. Here, dreams are intermingled with excitement, firm handshakes – with feverish travel, and laughter – with nervous expectation.
– The atmosphere! It’s homey and it’s fantastic. That’s why the guests return, says Izumi Takasu Brette, lead architect on the project.

The new owners wanted to give the hotel a fresh look – without starting from scratch. Another condition was the hotel’s continued operation during repairs. Consequently, making delicate changes wasn’t just logical but dictated by necessity.
The first challenge Semrén &amp; Månsson tackled was giving the lobby a modern look. The spaces at the entrance level were somewhat cavernous and ill-defined, leaving this part of the hotel feeling a bit cold and difficult to navigate. At the same time, the primary materials were of good quality and durable, such as hardwood and stone, including metallic and wood floors, so they were kept as the basis for the future design.

<h3>Business meetings, networking and esthetic pleasure from the rooms</h3>

The hotel is a popular spot for business meetings near Copenhagen, so Semrén &amp; Månsson decided to make the conference portion visible right from the entrance. The first floor was also gradually added with the markings of the Clarion hotel chain and given a conceptual restaurant by Marcus Samuelsson: Kitchen &amp; Table. The design of the restaurant was augmented with details intended to complement the rest of the décor.
– The design concept boiled down to dividing the space into smaller zones with different themes that would continue to be interconnected. It’s an informal, modern place for meetings, where people truly enjoy their stay and can avoid the stress of travel, says Birgitte Mordt.
The Clarion Living Room consists of spaces with various types of leisure zones. Each zone is imbued with its own visual look that still remains tied to the larger whole. The varied lighting accentuates shapes and colors, while many details were specially developed for this particular hotel.
The renovations gave the hotel the Clarion look, with its modern design accents, by adding elegant lines and classic, enduring elements – all without capital repairs. The updates that the project’s chief architect, Birgitte Mordt, is happiest with include the twelfth floor. The Semrén &amp; Månsson designers transformed it from a rarely-used VIP space into five exclusive hotel rooms.
– The expansiveness of the four-meter ceiling height gave the rooms the atmosphere that we had imagined. The rooms are elegant and cozy modern classics with a little flair. As a hotel guest, you’re pleasantly surprised when you first open the door to such a room, where esthetic enjoyment awaits you inside,” confides Birgitte Mordt.

The tallest building in Scandinavia – the 245m Karlatonet – is being erected in the center of Göteborg. Around it, an elevated new municipal district is being formed. Semrén &amp; Månsson Concern got the opportunity to participate in this ambitious project.

The new district is being created at the site of a former parking lot in the Lindholmen area. The Karlatornet skyscraper, expected to reach a total height of 245 meters or 73 floors, is poised to change Göteborg’s entire cityscape. City history is being written at the former Lindholmen parking lot. The Karlatornet, with a planned height of 73 floors or 245 meters, is aiming to redraw the Göteborg horizon.
It’s even being subjected to redesign on our screens. Hotels, residential foyers and observation decks; apartment complexes, offices and a gigantic underground building designed to house everything – from parking facilities for vehicles and bikes to technological solutions for the media needs of the entire district.
While we may not have won the tender and clinched the order for the tower’s design back in 2014 – that distinction went to the American firm Skidmore, Owings &amp; Merrill (SOM) together with the Danish firm Entasis – since its inception, Semrén &amp; Månsson has nevertheless played an increasingly important role in the development of Karlastaden. From a “simple” local partner for SOM and consultant for Karlastaden Utveckling AB, which is overseeing the project, to responsibility for the tower’s construction design as well as the design of two new neighborhoods in the district. At the same time, we’ve been assisting other project participants with their ongoing work involving the compilation of composite images and conduct of investigations.
– With our experience working in Poland, we understand what it’s like to be in SOM’s position. Winning a tender in a country where you’ve never worked before isn’t easy, and we know how to lend support and assistance in the most effective way,” says Magnus Månsson, architect and concern chef.

Thanks to this project, Karlastaden is poised to emerge as a point of attraction for Göteborg residents and visitors alike. Lots of people will also live and work here, which necessitates taking a long-term approach to both the district’s esthetics and practical solutions. The overarching goal is creating an environmentally, economically and socially sustainable district offering new and unexpected impressions. At the same time, it must function as a well-oiled machine.
&#8211; Such a technically and logistically complicated project demands close coordination among resources and participants. Together with our colleagues from Zynka BIM and Zynka Visual, we’re ensuring smooth coordination across the entire project team. Both as consultants open to dialogue, and as technical specialists, says Sophie Dufva.
Semrén &amp; Månsson, one of the invited consultants, has been involved in the project longer than anyone else and is handling a wide range of different tasks. In addition to our role as architects and consultants, as a group of companies, we’re also playing a key role in coordination – both at the general level, and with respect to the project’s digitalization. And it’s precisely this aspect that sets Karlatornet even farther apart as a project imposing the most stringent demands on digital tools. To ensure that the numerous consultants involved can work seamlessly on the solution of intricate technical problems, they must be provided with a continuous and unified digital space. All of the blueprints are presented in digital form, and the 3D-model requirements are extremely high – it’s filigree work, in which our colleagues from Zynka BIM play one of the leading roles.

One of Sweden’s best-known golf resorts, Ekerum Resort on Öland Island, is slated to be transformed into a high-end specialty hotel. The project is the result of a tender victory won a few years back. In order to create the modern hotel, we drew inspiration from the magnificence and austerity of nature. Nature, weather changes, culture and food. And an experience that changes depending on the time of year. That’s a concise way of summing up the concept for Ekerum Resort, which is expanding its operations thanks to the resort’s new hotel offering. It will house roughly 180 rooms, a spa center, conference halls and restaurants.
In the Semrén &amp; Månsson design, the island’s nature served as inspiration for exclusive architectural expression. The interplay between the structure of the building and the existing farm structures, on the one hand, and the flat landscape with its endless horizon, on the other, is the jumping-off point for this modern hotel, which is destined to become not only a grouping of rooms but also a meeting place. The historical qualities of the original farm building, combined with striking modern architecture, formed the basis for the creation of a hotel boasting individuality and expressiveness, making it an attractor to the locale.
How to create something that would be subordinate to the site’s conditions and existing structures, while at the same time featuring the distinctive traits expected of a well-developed destination?
– As a matter of fact, the answer is simple: we just have to utilize the conditions that the locale offers. The view, surroundings and local building traditions all inspire us to choose island limestone, wood and glass, where the horizon and flat landscape give architecture strength. The ideas came to us of their own accord,” confides the architect and owner of Semrén &amp; Månsson, Magnus Månsson.

<h3>A popular destination is becoming even more popular</h3>

At Ekerum, situated at Öland’s highest point, there’s already a successful resort. Thanks to its gastronomical delights, beautiful locale and spa centers, Ekerum is already a very popular vacation destination for everyone – from tourists and wedding guests to golf enthusiasts. Ekerum’s golf facilities boast the two best 18-hole courses in Sweden. But aside from golf, there’s also indoor and outdoor athletic facilities: padel courts, jogging tracks, tennis courts and football pitches.
“The grass is simply fantastic – it looks like a golf green!” raved Per Lagerstrom from the Swedish Football Association.
In other words, the conditions for the development of an even stronger brand and reinforcement of the tourism area are optimal.

The character of the buildings is determined by three elements: stone, glass and wood, which alternate from floor to floor. The foundation, made of Öland limestone, forms the basis: it’s firmly tied to the ground and landscape with its characteristically low limestone walls. Situated above is a translucent terrace and the entrance floor, providing a smooth transition between the indoor and outdoor space. And at the very top: a simple farm structure with an exterior wooden louvre that creates shade and visual effects.
With several different kinds of rooms, the hotel can offer a variety of accommodations with varying impressions, views and standards. Guests will continue to have the option of staying in a classical manor setting. The new additions will be the modern standard, premium and luxury rooms, nestled in the gables of the new hotel. They’re spaces that stretch along the hillside, twisting and turning as they reveal views of Kalmarsund. It’s almost as if nature were coming into the rooms themselves.

Restaurant Vrå in Göteborg is designed by Semrén & Månsson. Where Tokyo meets Bohuslän.

Semrén &amp; Månsson interior designers created not just a functional space for Vrå Restaurant, observing all of the necessary requirements governing the preservation of architectural landmarks, but also a real adventure for guests: from downtown Gotheborg, you’re transported right to the streets of Tokyo.

<h3>Tokyo in the heart of Gothenburg</h3>

The restaurant was originally situated in a small space at the Clarion Post Hotel in downtown Gotheborg. Over the course of its operation it garnered numerous rave reviews, the number of eager patrons grew, and the space and the kitchen’s capabilities began constraining its ambitions. Finally, the decision was made to keep the restaurant within the walls of the Clarion Post, having given it more space. Next came the logical question: where to put it?
After all, at issue was an architectural landmark governed by strict preservation requirements. Moreover, it was necessary to observe the technical requirements applicable to public eateries and specialized ventilation systems and to hammer out the logistics with the hotel’s other restaurant, Norda – all of which complicated the task at hand while making it more interesting. Invited to tackle the challenge was Semrén &amp; Månsson, author of the Clarion Post project.
Vrå Restaurant’s new home was ultimately situated in the heart of the hotel: a space that once served as the postal hall of Göteborg’s main post office. In creating the concept for the interior, we regarded the existing conditions not as limitations, but rather as opportunities. And as a result, we were able to create not just a functional space, but also a real adventure for guests: from downtown Göteborg, you’re transported right to the streets of Tokyo.
– That’s precisely why I love remodeling projects because they force you to challenge yourself and think outside the box. Virtually the entire interior was designed and constructed on-site, but since requirements governing the protection of architectural landmarks stipulate that everything must be reversible, we worked with various small “islands” that wouldn’t be secured to the historic structures,” explains Sara Ewresker, architect and coauthor of the interior design concept.

The move to the former postal hall created more than just logistical problems. It was important to preserve the sense of seclusion amidst the grandeur of the historic setting. The solution was to zone the space into separate areas following one after the other, much like the buildings on a small street. Featuring different characteristics, one by one, they arouse intrigue culminating in a singular impression of the interior. Folding screens, trellises, glass panels, ceiling screens and textiles gently delineate the space, while the various seating arrangements from classical Japanese seating to long tables and partitioned rooms make it possible to adjust the restaurant space depending on the number of guests. Rational and practical – yet atmospheric.

<h3>Unifying traditional Japanese and Scandinavian design</h3>

The approach taken by Vrå Restaurant is distinctive for its use of organic, primarily local products whose origins can be traced at each stage of their journey to the table. It’s the same idea that we reflected in thee interior. Just as on the menu, traditional Japanese elements sit side-by-side with Scandinavian ones. Both Japanese and Scandinavian design are dominated by durable natural materials: wood, glass and natural stone. The interior of Vrå Restaurant encompasses both cultures: sinks made of Bohuslan granite and limestone, handmade panels made of partially reworked Orrefors glass, and curtains hand decorated by a Japanese textile artist.

The transformation of the post office building into a modern hotel has given Göteborg not only a new attraction but also a new hotel for the city. It features a high concentration of mixtures of the past and present that wink at local history – from architecture to city fashion.

<h3>A postmodern take on neoclassical design</h3>

At the Clarion Hotel Post, the past meets the future. The lightness of the 2010s is creatively intertwined with the muted color spectrum of the 1920s and typical of the simplicity of those years. The antique furniture is complemented by modern materials such as limestone, slate and brass. Textile elements bring the two eras together. It’s the reincarnation of the same DNA as 100 years ago, albeit in a new guise.
“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” – a saying that aptly describes the approach taken by Semren &amp; Månsson to designing the Clarion Post interior. In the historical part of the building, particular attention was paid to preserving and restoring existing elements, with the recreation of such details as the baluster railing, wainscoting, stucco molding, window sills and casings. The 326 rooms in this part of the building are decorated in earthy tones. The subsequently added 174 rooms, located in the neighboring new building, are distinct for their bolder and contrasting color spectrum.

The preserved details harken back to the building’s previous purpose. The most prominently featured such detail is the drawing of postage stamps. It’s present in the rugs and in the textile elements throughout the hotel. The pattern is even repeated on the limestone floor of the former postal hall, where the lobby is currently situated. In this same space, the designers have placed a brass box, perforated with a drawing of a postmark. Even the writing desks and benches from the postal department have been given a new lease on life – augmented with wheels for mobility, they have been placed in the hotel’s public spaces.

The colors, patterns and textures come together, intermingle and repeat themselves in different parts of the hotel like a unifying yet dynamic theme. Of course, the main purpose of textiles is decorative. But they also have a secondary function – improving the acoustics of the building, with its stone floors and concrete ceilings. The designers’ attention to textiles also harkens back to the history of Göteborg’s successful fashion industry. Thus, for example, the undulating façades of the bar counters are intended to be reminiscent of the flowing draping of clothing.

<h3>Modular expansion of the room count</h3>

In 2018, five years after the hotel’s opening, it became clear that the existing 500 rooms would have to be supplemented by an additional 40. In a building found on the list of architectural landmarks, accomplishing such a task wasn’t easy. The solution was found by using turnkey modular rooms and hoisting them over the hotel roof for placement in the courtyard of the former postal building. The modules were equipped with all of the required finishings and came ready for connection to water and power.
Semrén &amp; Månsson designers were responsible for the design of both the modular room itself, as well as for its furniture. The main principle in designing the new rooms was that their furnishing had to be harmonious with the original 2012 concept: distinctly modern, but with the use of durable materials that would age gracefully. Due to the small size of the rooms, all of the interior solutions were custom-made and specially designed. Particular attention was paid to the texture and properties of the materials, as opposed to contrasting colors. The resulting pieces consequently feature marble, oak, mosaic and a particularly striking dresser made of metal and lava rock.
&#8211; The dimensions of the modules and specifications of their configuration meant that we had to find new creative solutions for the interior of the hotel rooms. Instead of the traditional writing desk, we designed a convenient relaxation zone behind a freestanding table, which makes it possible to both work and receive guests in a small space,” confides Sara Evresker, conceptual architect of the modular rooms.

A shining example of how, as a result of productive cooperation between architectural firm, municipal administration and developer, a historic landmark was able to preserve its look while gaining a new purpose. The building of the former 1920s post office in downtown Göteborg, with culturally-protected status, has become part of a new modern hotel and a striking attraction on the city map.

<h3>From state-protected landmark to modern hotel</h3>

The idea of transforming a national heritage site into a modern hotel complex initially seemed impossible. But the municipal administration decided to breathe new life into the mothballed postal building and open it to city residents in an effort to create a new point of interest in downtown Göteborg. The two critical issues in adapting the 1920s building to today’s functional and logistical requirements were the 13-story annex at the location of the former loading bay and creating a new entrance to the site.

<h3>Modern – but not minimalistic</h3>

What’s to be expected when the muted tones of the 1920s enter into an artistic union with the dramatic lightness of the 2010s? The interior of Clarion Hotel Post is brimming with unexpected encounters and refined maximalism. Original interior details are delicately accentuated by modern additions made of elegant materials such as limestone, slate, brass and textiles. The same DNA – just in a new reincarnation.

Such façade finishing materials as copper, slate and granite in the new building resonate with the features of the historic building. But with respect to everything else, the 13-story building stands out, towering over the city skyline like a postmodern monolith. Semrén &amp; Månsson took a delicate approach to the property’s historic heritage. This was reflected in the interior details, which play up the continuity of time. The greatest architectural change to the former post office building is the central concourse, created at the site of the surviving postal hall. Worthy of special attention is the hotel’s nine-meter-long registration counter, completely covered in Orrefors crystalline prisms.

Some time after the hotel’s opening, the need for additional rooms arose. By that time, unused construction sites had appeared above the hotel’s congress hall space. Consequently, work on the four-story, 40-room annex, which we had started back in 2018 at that very same location, could be dubbed the “missing piece of the puzzle.”
This solution required unprecedented precision. The rooms were designed by us at Semrén &amp; Månsson, fabricated in Latvia and then delivered in the form of turnkey modules that were hoisted into the hotel’s interior courtyard by a massive crane and laid against each other. On site, the only work left to do was building the hotel-room corridors themselves and giving the façade some finishing touches.
With respect to design, just as with the initial work we did on the hotel back in 2012, we drew from the building’s existing materials while making some modern additions. Slate and copper from the start of design and onwards – played a connective yet contrasting role between the historic and new buildings.
